One of our own: Connie Lawn, Senior White House Correspondent

June 29th, 2010

By JillAnderson

Long time Lake resident Connie Lawn (aka “The Skiing White House Reporter”) tells us she is now the senior most White House Correspondent. She was second (having started her career in 1968) to Helen Thomas, but now that Helen has stepped down this moves Connie to the most senior position.

Connie told me that “Helen will always keep the title of Dean and the coveted front row seat should go to Fox News or Bloomberg”.

connielawn
Connie has written a third update of her book, “You Wake Me Each Morning” in which she talks about events such as one of the last interviews with Bobby Kennedy, meetings with Nelson Mandela and other leaders, a brief kidnapping in Lebanon, and whatever funny, inspiring stories she can remember.

You can purchase her book online at Amazon or even better, Connie has a few discounted autographed copies at her home on Stanford Circle. You can reach her via email at ConnieLawn(at)AOL.com.

Alice forwarded me these photos that she captured while out kayaking one day about a week ago. I love these photos! On Alice’s suggestion I emailed Bonnie Blyth to find out just who were/are the Golden Rays as I had never heard of them.

Here’s Bonnie’s Reply:
The Golden Rays are a group of approximately thirty over-55 ladies and one gentleman (all mostly way over 55) who perform Tap Dances at nursing and assisted living facilities, churches, malls, etc. all over Fairfax County.”

“Shan Farzan, who is a LB resident and an assistant leader of the group, gave a thank-you picnic this year on beach 5. (All the guests were so impressed with the Community Garden!) We couldn’t resist an impromptu tap dance on the grass and sand while listening to the music of “42nd Street”. We normally practice at the Little River Glen Senior Center. I have been dancing with the group for about 6 months (I used to dance with a group called the Rickety Rockettes in AZ before moving here), but most of the members have been dancing together for a decade or more.

What fun! Thank you Bonnie for sharing your story and big thank you to Alice for capturing the moment.

One of our own performing at Wolftrap on July 1st

June 21st, 2010

All photos are courtesy of the McGee Family

One of own, Pat McGee will be headlining at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center (for his 7th time!) on Thursday, July 1 at 8 PM.

Pat McGee - Spring 2010

The McGee family actually lives just down Columbia Pike from Lake Barcroft in Wynfield (next to Mason District Park), however their son, Pat was entrenched with our community while growing up here. He was a member of Lake Barcroft’s Swim Team, along with sister Darcie and brother Hugh, from the age of 4 to 18. He was also a Lake Barcroft lifeguard during high school and college.

Pat’s brother Hugh taught him to play guitar when he was 16. They performed together, and their first “concerts” were at the Rec Center and on the Hardy’s dock.

Pat started performing while in high school and while attending Longwood College, then moved to Richmond and began touring with his band. Pat has had much success touring nationwide, bringing original melodic rock, trademark rich harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, strong musicianship and energy to shows that are flat-out fun.

Pat now lives in Rhode Island with his family, but passes through here often to perform and visit his folks Lynne & Hugh McGee, brother Hugh Jr. & his family and friends.

Pat is working on a new album — his eighth — to be released this summer. To learn more and listen to some of Pat’s music, please visit: patmcgee.net.

Fun at Music in the Park Festival

June 16th, 2010

By JillAnderson

Last weekend my family & I stopped by the Music In the Park Festival; a fund-raiser for Glasgow Park. You might remember that I had posted about their event a month or so ago.

Anyway, we had a terrific time despite the heat. There were two moon bounces, several vendors, face painting and plenty of food. The fire department brought both their ladder and pumper trucks as well as the ambulance. I caught sight of Ms. Penny Gross but did not have an opportunity to snap her photo.
