What are you willing to pay to protect our kids’ education?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

By JillAnderson

A very important FCSB budget discussion focusing on the JEB Stuart school pyramid will be taking place tomorrow night (Nov 17th) at JEB Stuart High School Theater at 7:45 pm. Kaye Kory will be presenting on the FY2011 Budget and addressing parents’ concerns on the projected $162M deficit.

My friend, Ellie blogged in Around Annandale about a community meeting that occurred last Saturday at the George Mason Library regarding the Fairfax County Budget deficit of $315.6M and the impact to our school budgets. In her summary she states that most citizens attending were in favor of supporting a real estate tax rate increase to thwart the proposed budget cuts to our area schools.

I hope that our county officials will take into consideration the purpose of schools (read an excellent blog posting by Seth Godin – “What are schools for” when making their final cuts to the school budget.

Traci Cooke, President of the Sleepy Hollow Elementary School PTA also wrote a great post on the SHESPTA website about the importance of attending this meeting. You can read her version here – http://www.shespta.org/budget-info-fy2011

Please plan to attend this important meeting regarding the Fairfax County Budget and the proposed impacts to the Fairfax County School Board Budget.

It’s your tax dollars. What are YOU willing to pay to protect our Kids’ Education and our Future?

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

By JillAnderson

Sunday was an absolutely beautiful day; a perfect day for getting the leaves down to the street for Fairfax County pick-up- and, our 4-year old son wanted to help. The only problem was that we didn’t have a rake that he could handle.

They sure are beautiful - until it's time to clean them up.

On our way home from having breakfast at Whitlows in Clarendon we stopped at Ayers Variety & Hardware (a really fabulous Mom & Pop store – if you haven’t been, stop reading this and go now!) to see if they stocked small size rakes.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only were they open on Sunday; (according to Wilma Kaplan- she and her husband, Ronald are the owners and are LB residents – they’re open 7 days a week and are only closed 4 days per year – wow!) they do carry child-size rakes. Score!

Hey, thanks, this rake is just my size!.

Oh, man, what have I gotten myself into?

Hey, Daddy - have fun. We're all done.

If you have a small child or grandchild that would like to help with your leaves please stop by Ayers Variety & Hardware and pick up a kid-sized rake.

Lake Barcroft neighborhood (to my knowledge – all of us) are in Zone 6 in the Fairfax County leaf pickup schedule and are scheduled for the 1st of 3 leaf pick-ups on November 18th. Will you be ready?

Trick-or-Treating was FUN

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

By JillAnderson

We had a terrific time trick-or-treating on Saturday night – although someone did steal the bowl that I had left out with candy. They didn’t just the candy; no, they took the bowl too.  Shame on them.

I hope that your family enjoyed the evening as well.

Halloween Safety Tips

Friday, October 30th, 2009

By JillAnderson

Sharon Bulova’s November Newsletter – “Bulova Byline” listed some great recommendations for staying safe this Halloween.

I am sharing them here in case you don’t receive Sharon Bulova’s newsletter. Feel free to add additional safety tips in the comments section.

Halloween is right around the corner, and this means sweets, costumes and scary adventures! Here are a few tips to keep your tots safe this holiday:

  • Don’t let the excitement of Halloween allow your children to ignore the normal safety precautions.
  • Do not talk to strangers; do not go into homes or cars of people they do not know; and do not approach animals they do not know.
  • Make sure children know their name, phone number and address and to provide this information to a police officer in an emergency or if they are lost.
  • Younger children should have an adult with them, while older children should provide their route and when they expect to return. If possible, provide a cell phone for your children.
  • Children should only visit homes that have their porch lights on.
  • Inspect your children’s candy before they eat it. Although food tampering is rare, it’s safest to eat only those candies that are individually wrapped and not homemade, unless you know the families who have prepared the homemade treats.
  • Have flashlights or glow sticks for children and/or for the accompanying adult.
  • Adults are reminded not to drink alcohol and drive.

By JillAnderson

The annual Lake Barcroft Halloween Parade (hosted by the Woman’s Club) will be held this coming Sunday (10/25) at 2 pm.

As a mother of a small child this is one of our favorite events; especially when the weather is nice.

Meet at Beach 5 at 1:45 pm to line-up. Kids and adults are both encouraged to wear costumes. And nice dogs may come too.
