One of our own: Connie Lawn, Senior White House Correspondent

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

By JillAnderson

Long time Lake resident Connie Lawn (aka “The Skiing White House Reporter”) tells us she is now the senior most White House Correspondent. She was second (having started her career in 1968) to Helen Thomas, but now that Helen has stepped down this moves Connie to the most senior position.

Connie told me that “Helen will always keep the title of Dean and the coveted front row seat should go to Fox News or Bloomberg”.

Connie has written a third update of her book, “You Wake Me Each Morning” in which she talks about events such as one of the last interviews with Bobby Kennedy, meetings with Nelson Mandela and other leaders, a brief kidnapping in Lebanon, and whatever funny, inspiring stories she can remember.

You can purchase her book online at Amazon or even better, Connie has a few discounted autographed copies at her home on Stanford Circle. You can reach her via email at ConnieLawn(at)AOL.com.

By admin

Special Contributor: Virginia Martinez

A big thanks goes out to two generous Lake Barcroft residents, Joel Gregorio and Stephanie Kozemchak, who volunteered their time to judge for this year’s Reflections Art Program at Belvedere Elementary. Reflection’s is a national art recognition program in its 42nd year.

Reflections Awards Recipients

Reflection's Awards Recipients

Joel Gregorio, our Lake Barcroft Newsletter Photo Editor, judged the photography category of this year’s Reflections program. Stephanie Kozemchak, a local art teacher/tutor with extensive art teaching experience, judged the visual arts category.

We received a record 130 entries in the areas of literature, film & video, photography, and music. Two of our students went on to win an “award of excellence” (2nd place) at Council level. The children were delighted to receive award & participation ribbons at an ice cream social at Belvedere this past month.

The Belvedere PTA is very grateful to them for volunteering their talents and many hours of their own personal time to judge the children’s artwork.

Thank you, Stephanie and Joel, for your commitment to our community and school.

Newcomers’ Holiday Gift-Exchange Party 2009

Monday, December 14th, 2009

By JillAnderson

Submitted by Special Guest Contributor: Sharon Pacchiana on behalf of the Newcomers’ Group

What do you get when you combine wonderful neighbors, gracious hosts, a beautiful home, delicious food and Santa Claus? The Newcomers Christmas Party!

A Toast - Elf Matt Friedman, Newcomers' President Trish Gomersall, Santa Joe Pisciotta

Over 115 people gathered together on Saturday, December 12th, bringing appetizers, vegetables and desserts to share with everyone. (Goodness, we have some superb cooks at Lake Barcroft!)

Anticipating the next gift

Anticipating the next gift.

Lynn and Deepak Varsheneya, our awesome hosts, had decorated their beautiful home in glowing lights and ornaments, truly setting the scene for a joyous evening. Deepak kindly served as the bartender, providing wine, beer and a “wicked” egg nog that was to die for; too bad egg nog only comes around one time a year. Some of us could get used to that spirit!

The entertainment of our joyous Santa Claus (a.k.a. Joe Pisciotta) and his very “helpful” Elf Matt Friedman conducting the gift exchange was really a highlight. I don’t know which was more enjoyable, the commentary and “edits” on what people brought or actually exchanging presents. They really did a great job keeping everyone laughing throughout the whole event.

It was a well coordinated event, thanks to Colleen Coyle and many other hard-working members of the Newcomers Board, especially our President, Patricia Gomersall.

You won’t want to miss this event next year!

You can find out more about the Newcomers’ Group on Lakebarcroft.org. Newcomers’ Club memberships run from September 1-August 31. Dues of only $20 per household entitle you to discounts on many club events. For more information, please email Newcomers@LBNewcomers.com

Lake Barcroft Art Festival – November 14-15

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

By JillAnderson

A Lake Barcroft Art Festival? You bet. Our very own Art Festival!

The 1st (hopefully Annual) Lake Barcroft Art Festival showcasing the works of local and regional artists will be taking place this coming weekend at 6364 Lakeview Drive.

Our neighbor and friend, Matt Friedman is co-hosting (along with Denny Horner) this very special event at his nearly completed Lake-front home on both Saturday and Sunday, Nov 14th & 15th from 12 pm until 5 pm.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to interview Matt (via email so as to not infect him with the flu bug) regarding the event:

How did you come up with the idea for an art festival?
Matt: I was walking around the house one evening as the sun was setting, and kept thinking about how wonderful the house would look with art on the walls that could pick up the evening sun. This started a train of thought. I started envisioning all the local artists in lake Barcroft and which pieces would look really good on the walls. Since the house is so close to completion, and will be going on the market soon, this win-win idea struck me.

The tall walls, modern design, and significant amount of natural light, all make for a great art social gathering. The win win, is that we would like to get lots of traffic through the house as it enters the market, and we wanted to provide a venue for the artists to show their work to the neighborhood as well as to potential buyers. Some of the artists have agreed to consign some of their art at the house, so it will remain to adorn the walls after the event is complete.

How many local artists will be showing their work? What types of work?
Matt: We are still working out the final details but we should have between 20 and 30 artists displaying work at the event.

Is there a charge to come to the Art Festival?
Matt: No charge to come to the festival, we invite all to come, enjoy, and please support the artists. Also, if anyone is interesting in a modern contemporary new home on the waterfront.

What are the low and high price ranges for the artwork?
Matt: The prices will range from a couple of hundred dollars to well over ten thousand.

You’re hosting this event at your newly completed home on Lakeview Dr. Is the art festival intended to drive traffic to generate sales leads for the house?
Matt: In short, the answer is yes. Actually, I am hoping to accomplish a couple of things with this event. The first is to create traffic for the house, the second is to hopefully initiate what could become an annual Barcroft event. Finally, I simply wanted to take advantage of the fact that the house will be empty, and have a fun event.

Did you rent furniture for the house?
Matt: No. The house will be mostly unfurnished for the event.

In one of your lakelink postings you mentioned that you might hold a second event that would be more of a gallery type event. Please explain.
Matt: Many of the artists have asked if they could keep the art there and have a focused gallery style event for some of their patrons. We agreed, since they have been so cooperative in supporting this event.

What will be your measure of success for an event like this? Turnout? Artist sales?
Matt: There are a number of measures that we could use to gauge the event, but honestly, if the event creates such a draw from artists and attendees that we have a second annual event next year. We should claim victory!

I am really looking forward to the event. How about you?
