Baileys Crossroads Land Use Community Meeting

Mark your calendars for April 15th as your taxes will (hopefully) be completed and you have the opportunity to see a presentation on the preferred land use concept for a portion of the Baileys Crossroads Community Business Center (CBC).

The concept will be presented at the Goodwin House Auditorium, 3440 South Jefferson Street, Falls Church on April 15th from 7-9 pm. Parking is available in the visitors lot.

The concept is intended to stimulate revitalization of this area, as well as take advantage of the proposed streetcar route to run between the CBC and Pentagon City. It features more mixed-used development; easier pedestrian, bicycle and transit rider access; and increase green spaces.

It is envisioned that the densest development will be focused in the area near the future streetcar stop along South Jefferson Street on the north side of Leesburg Pike. This urban-style downtown will incorporate mixed-use buildings with ground-floor retail, a tree-lined grid of streets and a new arts center. A greenway will connect the north and south sides of Leesburg Pike.

The land use concept specifically covers the area to the south and east of the interchange of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Columbia Pike (Route 244) in the Baileys Crossroads Community Business Center area.

One of our neighbors, Neil Simon sent me an email yesterday:

“I was out on the frozen lake Sunday and it was one of the best day’s of my life. Never skated on a pond before. Amazing. Any chance anybody has any photos they could put up on the blog of all the people out on the ice?”

Important Side Bar Message from Cindy Waters; President LBA: “Last February, I wrote an article for the LB Newsletter concerning skating on the lake. Most, if not all, of my predecessors have written similar items for the newsletter and Lakelink. I’m posting it below as a reminder to all neighbors”.

“Portions of the lake are now frozen over, prompting the annual questions concerning skating on the lake. The LBA rule when the lake is frozen is simple: ‘Persons using frozen portions of the lake for any purpose do so at their own risk.’ It would be wise for everyone to remember that there is still a lake under that ice with flowing water and currents. This can result in areas of thin ice being close to areas where the ice seems thicker. … Be aware that the LBA and the WID do not measure the thickness of the ice, nor do they otherwise assess the condition of the ice for skating. …there could still be some weeks left of freezing temperatures creating ice in certain areas of the lake. If you still feel that you must go onto the ice, remember that you are doing so at your own risk. Use extreme caution.”

Bailey’s Fire Station Open House was Fun!

As posted last week, our local fire stations hosted Open Houses this past Saturday. When my son and I stopped by the Bailey’s Fire Station around 11 am the place was hopping.

We stopped by an information table and picked up a “passport”. For each event that was completed, the kids would earn a sticker for their passport; once filled the passport could be shown on your way out to pick up a prize (also known as candy).

The events included a tour of the ambulance, the pumper and ladder trucks, a terrific maze that the kids crawled through, demonstrations on creating an emergency exit plan for your home and one on what to do (stop, drop and roll) if your clothes catch on fire.

The best event? A pumper fire hose where the kids had a chance to put out a pretend fire on a wooden house.

A big thank you to the Bailey’s Fire Department for all the fun. We’re definitely planning on attending their next event.

Fire Prevention Week 10/4-10/10

It’s Fire Prevention Week in Mason District; according to Penny Gross’ Mason Matters – Fall 2009 newsletter.

Fire Prevention Open House

Fire Stations throughout our area will hold Fire Prevention Open Houses on Saturday, Oct 10th – 10am – 4 pm. The Bailey’s Fire Station is planning on having a maze and some crafts for kids and parents can get their blood pressure checked. Mark your calendars.

Plan to stop by the Bailey’s Crossroads Fire Station this weekend to learn about fire prevention and to meet our local firemen & firewomen.
