Over 115 people gathered together on Saturday, December 12th, bringing appetizers, vegetables and desserts to share with everyone. (Goodness, we have some superb cooks at Lake Barcroft!)

Lynn and Deepak Varsheneya, our awesome hosts, had decorated their beautiful home in glowing lights and ornaments, truly setting the scene for a joyous evening. Deepak kindly served as the bartender, providing wine, beer and a “wicked” egg nog that was to die for; too bad egg nog only comes around one time a year. Some of us could get used to that spirit!

The entertainment of our joyous Santa Claus (a.k.a. Joe Pisciotta) and his very “helpful” Elf Matt Friedman conducting the gift exchange was really a highlight. I don’t know which was more enjoyable, the commentary and “edits” on what people brought or actually exchanging presents. They really did a great job keeping everyone laughing throughout the whole event.

It was a well coordinated event, thanks to Colleen Coyle and many other hard-working members of the Newcomers Board, especially our President, Patricia Gomersall.

You won’t want to miss this event next year!

You can find out more about the Newcomers’ Group on Lakebarcroft.org. Newcomers’ Club memberships run from September 1-August 31. Dues of only $20 per household entitle you to discounts on many club events. For more information, please email Newcomers@LBNewcomers.com

Woman’s Club Holiday Party was a Blast

Monday, December 7th, 2009

By JillAnderson

I was invited by Victoria Fernandez to stop by the Woman’s Club Holiday Party to meet some of our neighbors and take some photos of the event to share with you.

The holiday party was held at the beautiful home of George Waters and his wife, Cindy Waters. When I arrived at 7:30 pm the party was in full swing with probably 70-80 people in attendance despite the fact it was snowing outside.

Did You Know?

Carol and her husband, Tony have been residents of Lake Barcroft two times; with a 14-year lapse between them when they moved to California. Victoria with her husband, Luis own a Structural Engineering company, Fernandez & Associates in Falls Church. Luis handles the engineering portion while Victoria manages the business side of things.

Jack & Jan Keith

The Keiths’ are original owners of their house on Mansfield Rd; having built it in 1957. They have had to leave our area on two different occasions but are thankful that they never sold their home here.

Debra Lee, Stair Calhoun & Michael Calhoun

Debra is an artist; who knits extraordinary handbags and other items that she sells at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria. Stair is the owner of Little River Yoga. The dinner line was forming and I didn’t get a chance to find out about Michael Calhoun. My apologies.

I stopped and introduced myself to Ilona (who, along with Victoria Fernandez, are Co-Presidents of the Woman’s Club) who was chatting with Duffy Ftikas & Chris Finch while others were nibbling on appetizers.

George Waters, pictured above; found a few minutes to mingle with Alice Lowenthal and Leigh Gonzales before having to run off for more host duties.

I didn’t have a chance to meet all of the party-goers but a few that I spotted included Kevin Howe, Betsy Washington, Steve Klein, Burma Klein, Eva Kosztarab & Ken Kastner.

The Food looked fabulous!

There was an abundance of food; including Chef Luis Fernandez’ Roasted Pork Loin, Chef Ken Kastner’s famous Fried Turkey and tempting side dishes brought by the guests. I overheard many guests ooh and ahh over George’s famous Eggnog. Next time, I’m going to make sure that I try a glass (or two).

I hope to see YOU at next year’s Woman’s Club Holiday Party.

In the meantime, you can learn more about the important work that the Woman’s Club does as well as find out about how to join them at Lakebarcroft.org.
