Protect Children Against Environmental Hazards

  • Kick the chemical habit and make your lawn safe for children to play on. The use of synthetic lawn chemical fertilizers and pesticides can cause permanent and life threatening injuries to children.
  • Know where your child plays. Don't allow children to play near or dig in the soil around treated utility poles. Utility poles contain dangerous wood preservatives that are released to the soil.
  • Pick up after your pet. Pet feces contain bacteria and parasites, which are responsible for some illnesses in humans.
  • Use common sense when allowing your child to swim in the lake. Swimming in murky water isn't wise. Storm waters or runoff bring additional sediment from upstream and may contain pollutants and higher levels of fecal coliform.
  • Evaluate your child's school bus stop. Must your child wait near locations where pesticides are consistently used. Ask that property owners and lawn services post treated areas. Keep children and pets off of chemically treated areas.
  • Ask your neighbors to notify you if they must use pesticides. Do not allow your children or pets to remain outside during chemical applications. Cover sandboxes and swimming pools. Wash play equipment, patio furniture, and toys following pesticides applications.
  • Don't buy or use any product that you aren't sure is safe for your child or the environment. Think about what your grand children's environmental issues will be.
