Lake Barcroft Association is pleased to announce that we will be offering weekly swim lessons and a summer program for children ranging from 3 – 12 years old. The goal of this program is to offer young swimmers a range of swim instruction, from basic aquatic exploration to stroke readiness and to provide a fun and safe way to improve their swimming abilities in an open body of water such as Lake Barcroft. Please note, you must be a current member of LBA or sponsored by a current member to sign up for our swim lessons.
Level 1: Tadpoles (Ages 3-5) This is our beginner level for kids who are starting to learn the basics. Children must be able to leave their parents willingly, be potty trained, feel comfortable in the water, and be able to follow directions. Based upon the level of interest, there may be two groups within this age range, and we will determine the groups based upon on your child’s age and skill level. In this class, your child will gain basic aquatic skills, including entering and exiting the Lake safely, blowing bubbles with their mouth and nose submerged, floating and glide on their backs. The primary focus for our tadpole group is for swimmers to begin to develop comfort and confidence in the water.
Level 2: Frogs (Ages 6 – 9) For our intermediate kids who are willing to put their face in the water and can move in water with or without the assistance of a flotation device. These swimmers will learn how to bob, fully submerge in the water, float on their front and back, glide on front and back, roll from front to back and swim at least two body lengths. Based upon the level of interest, there may be two groups within this age range, and we will determine the groups based upon on your child’s age and skill level. This class helps children increase their comfort in the water while developing independence in their skill performance. The main goal of Level 2 is for swimmers to learn the basic skills and confidence needed to begin developing the basics of freestyle and backstroke.
Level 3: Turtles (Ages 9 – 12) For more advanced swimmers who are ready to start learning basic strokes and can swim without the assistance of a floatation device. The students will learn how to safely enter, exit, swim and tread water in deep water and hold their breath for at least five seconds under water. Based upon the level of interest, there may be two groups within this age range, and we will determine the groups based upon on your child’s age and skill level. They will also develop skills including rotary breathing, swimming front crawl, elementary backstroke and back crawl for at least five yards. The primary focus for our Turtles group is to develop their abilities and make them strong swimmers in an open body of water. It serves as a good pre-curser to our Junior Lifeguard Program.
Classes are both separated by age and maturity level. They both cover the same concepts but the requirements to pass the different levels are also different based upon the age of your child. Swimmers can move through the levels flexibly depending on their comfort-level, motivation, and mastery of skills.
