UPDATED 09/05/19 - Sanitary Sewer Line Leak Notification from Fairfax County - September 3, 2019

UPDATE - September 5th, 2019:

Residents,

Fairfax County staff has informed us that the sanitary sewer leak that had occurred in the area of Putnam Street was in fact stopped Monday evening and that permanent repairs to the sewer line are scheduled for next week. Due to the time that has passed  since the leak was stopped, the relatively small nature of the leak and lack of clear information on whether any of the material released ever reached Holmes run,  we feel that any hazard to the lake that may have existed has now passed.  However, there is always risk with swimming in an open body of water and we recommend that everyone practice the following guidelines that are outlined in the ADVISORY ON LAKE BARCROFT WATER QUALITY (http://lakebarcroftwid.com/wpcontent/uploads/2019/03/WID_LBA_WaterQualityAdvisory_140728.pdf).

Respectfully,

Davis Grant

ORIGINAL POSTING BELOW:

Residents,

Please be advised the LBWID has received a notification from Fairfax County’s Wastewater Collection Division that there was a sanitary sewer line leak upstream of the lake yesterday evening. The leak was in the area of Putnam Street and was from a relatively small sewer line. The County was able to stop the leak within a few hours of it being reported. At this time it is still unknown how much of the waste water may have gotten into Holmes Run and ultimately Lake Barcroft. Given the timing of the leak and the likely small quantity of waste water that escaped we do not believe that there is any real risk to the community.

If you would like to err on the side of caution it may be best that you do not swim in the lake for the next 24 hours. We will update you as we learn more from the County.

The issue is NOT an emergency but the message is urgent.

Respectfully,

Davis Grant
